Foreo Luna 4 Plus: review of the best-selling sonic facial cleanser
Full review of the Foreo Luna 4 Plus. How T-Sonic cleansing works, 16 intensities, scientific evidence, comparison with Luna Mini 3 and manual cleansing. Price and where to buy.
The Foreo Luna 4 Plus is the fourth generation of the sonic facial cleanser that turned Foreo into a global brand. The premise is simple: sonic pulsations transmitted through silicone touchpoints clean skin more thoroughly than hands or a washcloth. After more than a decade on the market and millions of units sold, the relevant question in 2026 is not whether it works, but whether it is worth the price compared to the alternatives.
How T-Sonic cleansing works
T-Sonic stands for "transdermal sonic pulsations." This is not ultrasound (which operates at much higher frequencies and can alter cellular structures), but rather mechanical vibration at sonic frequencies that creates rapid movement in the silicone touchpoints on the device's surface.
The mechanism is purely mechanical: high-frequency vibrations agitate particles of dirt, oxidized sebum, makeup residue, and dead cells that are adhered to the skin surface and within pores. By combining this movement with a facial cleanser (gel or foam), the result is a more efficient cleanse than manual friction.
A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2016) compared sonic device cleansing versus manual cleansing in 20 subjects over 4 weeks. The sonic device group showed a significantly greater reduction in pore congestion and post-cleansing makeup residue, as measured by VISIA imaging analysis. Another study in Skin Research and Technology (2018) confirmed that sonic cleansing improves the removal of urban pollution particles (PM2.5, PM10) adhered to the skin surface.
However, no study has demonstrated that sonic cleansing directly improves anti-aging outcomes, reduces wrinkles, or stimulates collagen. Its benefit is hygienic and preparatory: cleaner skin absorbs subsequent actives better.
The 16 intensities and Luna 4 Plus design
The Luna 4 Plus offers 16 levels of T-Sonic pulsation intensity, controllable from the device or the Foreo app. This is significantly more than the 8 levels of the Luna 3 and allows for real customization.
Physical design:
- Front surface: thicker, more widely spaced silicone touchpoints, designed for the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) where there is more sebum and larger pores
- Back surface: finer, denser touchpoints for cheeks and sensitive areas
- Side zones: pulsation lines for the jawline and neck contour
- Material: medical-grade silicone, non-porous, free of BPA and phthalates
Non-porous silicone is perhaps the most practical advantage of the Luna over the old nylon brushes (like Clarisonic, discontinued in 2020). Nylon brushes accumulate bacteria between the bristles and need regular replacement. The Luna's silicone cleans with soap and water, does not accumulate microorganisms, and lasts the life of the device. This means there are no replacement costs, which significantly improves the cost/value equation in the long run.
Battery and water resistance:
Rechargeable battery via USB-C with approximately one month of battery life with daily use (1-2 minute sessions). IPX7 certification: fully submersible, allowing you to use it in the shower without concern.

Foreo Luna 4 Plus
4th generation sonic facial cleanser with 16 T-Sonic intensities, non-porous medical-grade silicone, Foreo app connectivity. No replacements needed. Submersible IPX7.
Silicone vs bristle brushes: why it matters
The transition from nylon bristles to silicone was not just a marketing decision. There are real dermatological reasons.
A study from the University of Manchester published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology demonstrated that nylon facial cleansing brushes can harbor bacterial colonies (including Staphylococcus) after only one week of use, even with regular washing. The porous surface of nylon traps moisture and organic residue, creating a favorable environment for microbial proliferation.
Non-porous silicone does not offer this adhesion surface. A simple rinse with soap and water eliminates virtually all residue. This is especially relevant for acne-prone skin, where reintroducing bacteria during cleansing can worsen breakouts.
The other important difference is abrasion. Nylon brushes, especially when they deteriorate, can cause micro-abrasions on the skin surface. Medical-grade silicone is significantly softer and less likely to damage the skin barrier, making it safer for daily use and for skin prone to sensitivity.
The evidence: does it really clean better than your hands?
Yes, but with nuances.
Available studies agree that sonic device-assisted cleansing removes more residue than manual cleansing, especially in high-sebum-production areas (nose, forehead, chin). The difference is more pronounced with waterproof makeup and mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide), which are harder to remove with manual friction.
What the science says:
- Deeper cleansing: multiple studies show 6-12x more removal of dirt and residue vs manual
- Better preparation for actives: clean skin without residue absorbs serums and subsequent treatments better
- No evidence of direct anti-aging benefit: sonic cleansing does not stimulate collagen, does not reduce wrinkles per se
- Potential irritation for compromised skin: if your barrier is already damaged, sonic cleansing can be excessive
The last point is important. If you have rosacea, active atopic dermatitis, or are using high-concentration retinoids (which temporarily thin the stratum corneum), sonic cleansing can be too aggressive, even at the lowest intensity. In these cases, gentle manual cleansing with a cleanser like CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser or COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel is preferable.
Luna 4 Plus vs Luna Mini 3: which one to choose?
Foreo keeps the Luna Mini 3 in its catalog, a more compact and affordable version (~$130). The main differences:
| Feature | Luna 4 Plus | Luna Mini 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Price | ~$250 | ~$130 |
| Intensities | 16 | 8 |
| Differentiated back zone | Yes (sensitive skin) | No |
| App connectivity | Full | Basic |
| Size | Standard | Compact (travel) |
| Best for | Full routine at home | Travel or budget |
Our recommendation: if it is your first time with a sonic cleansing device, start with the Luna Mini 3. The cleansing difference between 8 and 16 intensities is marginal for most users. If after 3-6 months you find yourself using it daily and want more customization, then the Luna 4 Plus is justified.

Foreo Luna Mini 3
Compact version of the Luna with 8 T-Sonic intensities. Same medical-grade silicone. Ideal for travel or as a first sonic device.
Sonic cleansing vs Korean double cleanse (manual)
The Korean double cleanse (oil cleanser + water-based cleanser) is the gold standard of facial cleansing in K-Beauty. The obvious question: do you need a $250 device if you already double cleanse?
The honest answer: probably not. A properly executed manual double cleanse removes the vast majority of residue. The oil cleanser dissolves makeup and sunscreen (which are the hardest to remove), and the second water-based cleanser carries away the oil residue.
Where the Luna adds real value is in the second cleansing step. Using the sonic device with the water-based cleanser improves pore cleansing, especially in the T-zone. If you have oily skin, visible pores, and live in a city with high pollution, the combination of double cleansing + Luna is superior to double cleansing alone.
But if you have normal-to-dry skin, use light makeup, and already double cleanse, the Luna is a "nice to have," not a "need to have."
Usage protocol
- Wet your face and apply facial cleanser (gel or foam, not oil)
- Turn on the Luna 4 Plus, select intensity (start at 3-5, increase gradually)
- T-zone first: forehead 15 seconds, nose 15 seconds, chin 15 seconds (thick silicone side)
- Cheeks: 15 seconds each (fine silicone side if you have sensitive skin)
- Total duration: 60-90 seconds. No more. Over-cleansing damages the barrier
- Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry with a clean towel
- Follow with toner, serum, and moisturizer as usual
- Frequency: 1-2 times per day (morning and/or evening). If you notice dryness, reduce to once a day or every other day
Common mistake: using the Luna for too long or at too-high intensities "to cleanse more deeply." This does not cleanse more; it irritates. 60-90 seconds at moderate intensity is sufficient.
Honest verdict
“The Foreo Luna 4 Plus is the best sonic cleanser on the market. The medical-grade silicone, no replacements needed, and 16 intensities justify it within its category. But the category itself has a problem: a properly done manual double cleanse costs $15 and achieves 80-90% of the result. The Luna adds real value for oily skin with heavy makeup in polluted cities. For everyone else, it is a pleasant luxury, not a necessity.”
