The oral collagen market moves $7 billion a year. Korea and Japan have been consuming collagen for decades in formats the West is only beginning to discover: individual sticks, chewable jellies, drinkable ampoules, peach-flavored powders. The real question is not whether oral collagen works (there is evidence that it does), but whether the Asian approach offers genuine advantages over the Western one.

The science of oral collagen

Does it actually work?

Yes, with nuances. The evidence has improved significantly since 2019:

Proksch et al., 2014 (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology): 69 women, 2.5g or 5g of collagen peptides for 8 weeks. Significant improvement in skin elasticity vs placebo. The improvement persisted 4 weeks after discontinuation.

Bolke et al., 2019 (Nutrients): Review of 11 studies with 805 participants. Oral collagen improved skin hydration, elasticity, and density. Effective dose: 2.5-10g/day for a minimum of 8-12 weeks.

de Miranda et al., 2021 (International Journal of Dermatology): Meta-analysis of 19 RCTs, 1,125 participants. Significant improvement in hydration and elasticity. Low molecular weight peptides showed better absorption.

How it works

Collagen peptides are not absorbed "intact" to go directly to your skin. The mechanism is more sophisticated:

  1. They are digested into di- and tripeptides (Pro-Hyp, Hyp-Gly)
  2. These peptides enter the bloodstream
  3. They accumulate in the dermis
  4. They stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen of their own
  5. The effect is signaling-based, not directly structural

Korean collagen vs Western collagen

The Korean approach

  • Predominant source: marine (fish), especially cod and salmon
  • Molecular weight: low (1,000-3,000 Da, nanopeptides)
  • Formulation: combined with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, elastin
  • Formats: individual sticks, jellies, liquid ampoules, flavored powders
  • Philosophy: "beauty from within," an ingestible as part of the skincare routine
  • Typical dose: 1,000-3,000 mg/day

The Western approach

  • Predominant source: bovine (Vital Proteins) or marine
  • Molecular weight: variable (2,000-10,000 Da)
  • Formulation: pure collagen, minimal additives
  • Formats: large powder tub, capsules
  • Philosophy: sports / joint supplement
  • Typical dose: 5,000-15,000 mg/day

Which absorbs better?

Molecular weight matters for absorption. Smaller peptides cross the intestinal barrier more efficiently:

Molecular weightAbsorptionApproach
1,000-3,000 DaExcellentKorean/Japanese
3,000-5,000 DaGoodPremium Western
5,000-10,000 DaModerateStandard Western

Korean peptides have a theoretical advantage in bioavailability, but the total dose is lower (1-3g vs 5-15g). The net result is probably similar: what matters is the total amount of dipeptides that reach the bloodstream.

Protocol

  • Minimum effective dose: 2.5g/day (Proksch 2014)
  • Optimal dose: 5-10g/day
  • Minimum duration: 8 weeks to see skin results
  • With vitamin C: always (essential cofactor for collagen synthesis)
  • Timing: morning on an empty stomach or before bed (both work)
  • Consistency: benefits revert once you stop taking it

Collagen: Korean vs Western

Lo mejor
    A considerar
      Veredicto

Oral collagen works, with real evidence behind it. The Korean approach (marine, low molecular weight, with vitamin C) makes biochemical sense. The Western approach (higher dose, more affordable) compensates with volume. Both work if you are consistent for 8+ weeks. Choose based on format and budget.
